Sonny Stitt, SIGNED, Original Glossy B&W, 8" by 10", Shaw Artists Corporation Publicity Photograph, inscribed, "To Dr. T, Musically, Sonny Stitt"; a striking early portrait of a razor sharp Stitt by the acclaimed jazz photographer, PoPsie Randolph, with his imprint to bottom right. From a group of fourteen original jazz photographs, each signed and inscribed to a Newark, New Jersey, physician and jazz fan ("Dr T"), who acquired the autographs in person during the 1950's at various clubs in New York and Philadelphia. Sonny Stitt (1924-1982), a virtuoso saxophonist and quintessential member of the bebop generation, was influenced early in his career by Charlie Parker, whose style he emulated and closely mirrored. Perhaps in part to distance himself from Parker, he began to play the tenor saxophone in 1950, and some critics suggest that his most significant work was produced on the larger horn. His recording career was prolific and over the years he played with the great figures of his era, including Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and Miles Davis, and had a long and fruitful partnership with fellow tenor saxophonist, Gene Ammons. In later years he seemed to prefer to work alone, touring relentlessly, often playing with pick up bands, always at a very high level, dedicated to and driven by the music. The photograph is very good+, soil mark to center of bottom margin with scattered surface dings, and mild age toning, touch of adhesive residue to verso; the autograph is about fine in red ink with light brushing to the inscription. With a copy of the detailed letter of provenance acquired with the collection from the previous owner, a family member who inherited the photographs from the collector's estate. J2144
