Albert Murray (1916-2013) was a celebrated African American social critic, essayist, biographer and novelist. His second innovatively structured book, has been described by Robert Bone as a “cross between inspired journalism, cultural commentary and spiritual biography”; it includes accounts of Murray’s travels in the South interviewing contemporary white southern writers, memories of his boyhood and youth, his awakening interest in literature at Tuskegee Institute, a portrait of his fellow student Ralph Ellison, and warm accounts of the “homefolks” in his native Mobile.
