Pantheon, New York, 2003, First Edition with complete number line, SIGNED by the author on the half title page; slim octavo, in quarter black cloth over black boards, appears unread, fine, in a like dust jacket, unclipped with a touch of shelf wear, now in mylar sleeve. This was the eminent essayist, critic and novelist’s first book of poetry, published late in his life. One could argue that Murray‘s personal definition of poetry as “the supreme effort to make words swing” had infused all his previous prose writing and that this elegant little collection makes "official" what has always been present in his work. Many of his life-long passions and concerns are revisited in the poems, opening with a set of “Aubades” in twelve bar blues verse form, followed by tributes to artists as diverse as T.S Eliot and Thelonious Monk, a lengthy poem celebrating one of his literary heroes, William Faulkner, insightful and moving odes to life, love and death, and always lurking at the edges, his sly and subversive humor. A late publication by a fine writer, very scarce indeed, we have seen no other signed copies of this title. J2037
