Ballantine Books, New York, 1957, First Edition with no further printings indicated; SIGNED and inscribed in French to the ffep. The authorís first book, a jazz novel set in Paris which follows the lives of two young expatriate jazz musicians and was the basis for the successful film of the same name, made in 1961. Filmed on location in Paris, the film was directed by Martin Ritt and starred Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward and Diahann Carol. Notably the film score was composed by Duke Ellington which featured performances by the Ellington Orchestra with Louis Armstrong, who had a part in the film, also appearing on two tracks; Ellington's film score was nominated for the Academy Award For Best Music in 1962. In pale blue cloth, spine is leaning slightly, touch of tanning to end papers, and top edge, spine ends slightly pushed, else very good++, pages are clean and unmarked. In the uncommon and fragile dust jacket, price of $3.00 to front flap, nicks to spine ends, heavy rubbing to spine and flap folds , light wear to extremities, else a solid very good, now in mylar sleeve. A very uncommon title in the first hardcover edition and exceptionally scarce, signed. J2027
