McGraw-Hill, New York, 1971, Stated First Edition, SIGNED By the author at the half title page; second book by the celebrated African American social theorist, essayist, biographer and novelist. Innovatively structured and described by Robert Bone as a “cross between inspired journalism, cultural commentary and spiritual biography”; includes accounts of Murray’s travels in the South interviewing contemporary white southern writers, memories of his boyhood and youth, his awakening interest in literature at Tuskegee Institute, a portrait of his fellow student Ralph Ellison, and warm accounts of the “homefolks” in his native Mobile. In black cloth, silver spine devices, bright gilt titles to spine and top board. Just a touch of rubbing to top edge of bottom cover, else fine, tight, unmarked; the dust jacket is near fine +, unclipped, touch of age toning to flaps, hint of wear at flap corners. A very nice copy in the difficult dust jacket, uncommon signed. J1998
