Mary Lou Williams, Original Vintage Revue Program, “Big Rhythm Show of 1952”, Royal Albert Hall [London], December 7, 1952, SIGNED and inscribed on the front wrap by Mary Lou Williams. In 1952, the great jazz pianist, composer, and arranger received an offer to perform extensively in the UK and then stayed on in Europe for two years. Because of long-standing difficulties between their respective Musicians Unions, American stars visiting the UK usually appeared in music halls or large revues which satisfied the British Union’s requirements for reciprocity, by heavily featuring British musicians and performers. This show was no exception, featuring “a star cast of eighty” primarily English entertainers, singers and musicians, but headlined by the American stars, Mary Lou Williams, backed by the Jimmy Walker Quintet, band leader and entertainer Cab Calloway, and the gospel and r&b quintet, Deep River Boys who had a big following in Europe during the 1950’s.
