John Coltrane, Original Vintage Concert Poster, First Printing, Kongress-Halle, Frankfurt, [Germany], Thursday, Oct. 31, 1963, concert produced in cooperation with Norman Granz, designed by Gunther Kieser. A1 Format (approx. 33" by 23"/ 84 cm. by 59.7 cm. ), imprint of Hans Michel and Gunther Kieser to bottom left edge, tiny closed edge tears at bottom right and lower left, shallow creasing and light rubbing to top left edge, toning to left side of verso, else the usually fragile poster is about near fine, clean, bright and unmarked. Increasingly scarce in collector's condition, this graphically bold, simple, but powerful abstract poster was designed exclusively for the great saxophonist's German Tour of 1963 and is the companion piece to one of Kieser's signature posters, designed for Coltrane's tour of Germany the previous year. Gunther Kieser (1930) is one of Germany's preeminent poster artists whose work can be found in the collections of major museums including, the Tokyo Museum, the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art. He has had a prolific and varied career, during which his technically innovative, provocative and brilliant designs have kept him in the fore front of European poster art. Kieser is perhaps best known for his jazz and rock concert posters, and particularly for the design work he did for the German concert producers Lippman & Rau from the 1950-80s. J1698
