Stored flat and shipped rolled in a mailing tube.
A superb and very scarce example of Gunther Kieser's early jazz poster art, a striking abstract designed exclusively for the German concert presentations of an extended European tour by this all-star ensemble. With his monumental Prestige recordings completed in Oct. 1956, Miles had agreed to headline this month-long package tour, as a star soloist appearing with his fellow luminaries, Lester Young and Bud Powell in various combinations, backed by the French pianist Rene Urtreger's Trio, with the Modern Jazz Quartet usually ending the performances. The few recordings from these European concerts mark the only occasions on which Miles is known to have recorded with the great tenor saxophonist Lester Young.
Gunther Kieser (1930) is one of Germany's preeminent poster artists whose work can be found in the collections of major museums including, the Tokyo Museum, the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art. He has had a prolific and varied career, during which his technically innovative, provocative and brilliant designs have kept him in the fore front of European poster art. Kieser is best known for his jazz and rock concert posters, and particularly for the design work he did for the German concert producers Lippman & Rau from the 1950-80s.
