Jazz At The Philharmonic Original Vintage Concert Poster, First Printing, Stuttgart, [Germany], Feb. 19, 1954, designed by Gunther Kieser. A1 Format (approx. 33" by 23"/ 84 cm. by 59.7 cm), imprint of Hans Michel & Gunther Kieser to middle left of recto, just a hint of rubbing to the bottom edge, else fine, remarkably bright and sharp. The piece has been stored flat and will be shipped rolled in a mailing tube. A very scarce poster from early in Kieser's career, designed exclusively for the JATP German concert appearances of 1954, the third European Tour by Granz' all-star aggregation. Consistent with the German jazz graphic tradition of producing posters exclusively for German concerts, it is interesting to note that Kieser designed an entirely different poster, in the smaller A2 format ( approx. 23.25" by 16", 59 cm. by 40.6 cm), for this same JATP concert presentation. Gunther Kieser (1930) is one of Germany's preeminent poster artists whose work can be found in the collections of major museums including, the Tokyo Museum, the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art. He has had a prolific and varied career, during which his technically innovative, provocative and brilliant designs have kept him in the fore front of European poster art. Kieser is perhaps best known for his jazz and rock concert posters, and particularly for the design work he did for the German concert producers Lippman & Rau from the 1950-80s. A beautiful and scarce example of Kieser's early jazz poster art, in collector's condition. J1700
