Outerbridge & Dienstfrey, New York, 1970, First Edition , First Printing, with “first published” and no further printings indicated, SIGNED on the title page by the author; the first book by the celebrated African American social theorist, essayist, biographer and novelist. Written when Murray was fifty four, this interrelated collection of essays firmly articulated a stance which took direct aim at much of the current thinking on the American Negro’s position in American society. Murray argued with wit and intelligence that African Americans were neither “hapless victims of cultural deprivation” nor “uprooted Africans”, denied their place in “White America”; but in fact should be considered as “American” as the frontiersman, with an essential and dynamic role in the creation of mainstream American culture. In green boards, white printed titles to spine, spines ends gently pushed, touch of rubbing to head of spine, else about fine, tight, square, unmarked; in a near fine, unclipped dust jacket, touch of rubbing to front hinge, head of spine and top corner flaps; small crease to top corner of front panel, in mylar sleeve. An important book in African American letters and scarce, signed. J1999
