Jazz At The Philharmonic, Original Concert Tour Program, 16th National Tour, [1955], presented by Norman Granz. For reasons that are unclear, just weeks before the Fifteenth Tour was to start in the fall of 1955, it was renamed the Sixteenth Tour for which this is the tour concert program. Beginning in July of 1944 Granz had staged a number of successful jazz concerts at the Philharmonic Auditorium, in his native Los Angeles and in the following year the budding young impresario took the show on the road. His inaugural National Tour in the Fall/Winter of 1945-46 marked the beginning of an extraordinarily successful venture, which in the coming decades would see the JATP concert tours extend to Canada, Europe, and the Far East, and in conjunction with his recording companies, Norgran Clef, and Verve, would make Granz the most successful and influential producer in jazz. In 1952 JATP had made its first full tour of Europe and its inaugural tour of Japan the following year. This '55 National Tour presented the usual stellar cast of musicians, including trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Gillespie, saxophonists Lester Young, Illinois Jaquet and Flip Phillips and drummers Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. In original wraps, 12" by 9", [28 pp], cover illustrations by David Stone Martin, sriking full-page bleed b & w photos; previous owner name to verso of front wrap with date " 10-19-55 Shrine Auditorium, LA" with neat ink annotations in same hand to photos of some of the musicians, identifying tunes which had been performed at the concert, e.g., by Roy Eldridge "Willow Weep For Me", Lester Young, "Don't Blame Me", and a note on drummer Buddy Rich's photo, "played 'til somebody stopped him". In original pictorial wraps, cover illustrations by David Stone Martin, 12" by 9", [24pp], tightly staple bound, closed tears to spine ends, light wear and rubbing to wraps and edges, else very good. An increasingly uncommon jazz collectible. J 1696
