Jazz Review Inc. New York, 1958-1961, First Edition, The Jazz Review, lot of 20 issues, edited by Martin Williams and Nat Hentoff. Perhaps the finest jazz journal ever published, The Jazz Review in less than three lamentably short years of publication, set new standards for jazz writing in America. Edited by Nat Hentoff and Martin Williams, two of the most influential jazz journalists and critics of the era, from its first issue in Nov. 1958, the Review featured an innovative and diverse mix of critical and historical essays, music analysis, book reviews, musicians' profiles, interviews and in a radical departure, record reviews which were often written by fellow musicians, (it is a delight, for instance, to read trumpeter Art Farmer's take on Sonny Rollins newly released Freedom Suite or trombonist Bob Brookmeyer's review of Miles Davis' Miles Ahead, in the inaugural issue). The quality of the writing, critical acumen and historical insight is reflected in the extraordinary roster of journalists, historians, critics and musicians who contributed to The Review in its short history. Handsomely designed, primarily by the gifted graphic designer Bob Cato, the journal stands as a vital celebration and indispensable documentation of jazz culture in the late 50's and early 60's. In 1962 Martin Williams edited a selection of pieces from the journal, published as Jazz Panorama by Crowell-Collier, the book presents a fine but necessarily limited selection from The Review's pages. In original pictorial wraps, 11" by 8.5", approximately 40-50pp, varies from issue to issue, tightly stapled bound, without markings, save a neat ink annotation to the front wrap of January 1959 issue which states Complimentary Copy. Condition ranges from very good+ to near fine, no tears or significant creasing, some mild spotting and soiling to wraps, rubbing and short closed tear to spine head of Sept. 1959 issue, all in collectible collection. Apparently limited in their print runs, copies of the magazine are increasingly scarce, particularly the first and early issues from 1958-9, so to find a run of 20 issues is now very uncommon. The lot consists of: the scarce first issues published in Nov. and Dec. 1958 and issues from January, February, June, July, August, September, October, November and December for 1959; issues from January, February, the stated combined March-April issue, May, June, July, August, November issues for 1960 and the Jan 1961 issue after which publication sadly appears to have abruptly ceased. This lot then is apparently lacking only 6 issues to complete the run.
A significant jazz collectible, very scarce in a run of this number. J1554
