James "Son" Thomas (1926-1993), Original "Blues Life" Magazine Cover, 1983, Germany, boldly SIGNED to his cover photo by James "Son" Thomas. One of the last of the traditional Delta Blues guitarists and singers, Thomas played the jook joints and barrelhouses of his native Mississippi for many years, before making his first significant recordings in the 1960's; during the 1970's and 80's he appeared in several films about the Delta Blues, made festival appearances, and recorded for independent and regional labels. Although highly regarded inside the blues community, Thomas is probably best known as a folk artist, notably for his unfired clay sculptures, often of skulls (reflecting his occupation as a grave digger), which have been widely exhibited in a number of prestigious American galleries. Near fine, 11 1/2" by 8 ", printed to gloss heavy paper stock, with a touch of handling wear and pen strike to bottom right edge; the autograph is fine in black marker without loss or fading. A very uncommon blues autograph; provenance, the comprehensive blues collection of the late Walter Glenn. J2267
