Sonny Terry (1911-1986) & Brownie McGhee 1915-1996), Original Vintage Photograph, Glossy, B & W, 8" by 10", dated on the verso, July 27, 1974; boldly SIGNED by Brownie McGhee in red ink, with Sonny Terry's mark "ST" in black ink to bottom right corner. (Sonny, who had been blind from his youth, sometimes also signed with an "X", usually with the assistance of Brownie who guided his hand, and in later years with a rubber ink stamp and pad, made for him by the British photographer, Valerie Wilmer). A nice candid shot of the celebrated blues and folk duo who first joined forces in the early forties and continued to perform and record together for nearly forty years before an acrimonious parting of the ways circa 1980. In the 1950's, embraced by the primarily white, urban American folk movement Sonny and Brownie enjoyed great success. With their deep roots in the blues, they were among the first blues musicians to tour at the outset of the Blues Revival of the 60's in England and Europe. They became very popular in England and were to appear there and in Europe on numerous occasions during the 60's, influencing a generation of blues and folk musicians. The photograph is about very good; printed to thin stock, with scattered creasing and dings, pencil annotation to verso, short closed tear to middle of the bottom margin, spotting to top right margin. The autographs are fine without loss, skipping or fading. Originally from the comprehensive blues collection of the late Walter Glenn. J2257
