Chet Baker Quartet, Original Concert Tour Program, for one day concert performances at the prestigious Palais des Beax-Arts, Brussels, and later in the evening at Cercle Royal Artistique, Anvers (Antwerp), presented by the Hot Club de Belgique; SIGNED on his full page program photo, "Thanks Mimi-Chet Baker-55". Also SIGNED by the members of Baker's quartet, Peter Littman, drums, Jimmy Bond, bass, and with the rare signature of pianist Dick Twardzik; also on the bill Dutch saxophonist Tony Voss and his quartet. The program is from the estate of Maria Therese "Mimi" Faelens, a Belgian music writer and journalist who wrote for Le Jazz Hot and other European music journals during the 1950's. Copies of original photographs of Ms. Faelens, with noted jazz musicians trumpet Buck Clayton and bandleader Stan Kenton are included with the piece. This was the first European Tour for Chet Baker, whose star had risen rapidly on the strength of his 1952 recordings with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. By 1954, at just 24, he had been selected as the top trumpeter in US jazz magazine readers' polls, besting Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie. The extended tour (which owed much to Chet's romantic pursuit of a young Parisian woman with whom he had become involved in the US), included performances in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Denmark, Italy and this Belgian performance in Brussels and Antwerp. Baker's regular pianist, Russ Freeman, had declined to tour with Baker apparently because of his reservations about Chet's growing heroin addiction. His replacement was the brilliant young pianist Dick Twardzik; a child prodigy trained as a classical pianist, Twardzik had attracted great admiration among his jazz peers but was still virtually unknown to the larger public. When he left for Europe his first recordings under his own name, now highly prized, had still to be released by Pacific Jazz. Tragically, just three weeks after this concert performance, on October 21, Twardzik died of a heroin overdose in his Paris hotel room. He was only 24 years old. In original wraps by poster artist Nory, 10 " by 8/12", (6pp), single staple bound, as issued, shallow horizontal crease, light rubbing to wraps, else about near fine without loss or tears, with Ms Faelens annotations in ink to program page concert song selections; the autographs are fine in blue ink. A very uncommon concert program, with a scarce early career signature of Chet Baker and the rare autograph of Dick Twardzik, the only one we have handled. J2193
