Zutty Singleton, Original, Vintage, Glossy, 8" by 10", B & W Photograph, boldly SIGNED and inscribed by Zutty at the top right; a fine candid portrait by renowned jazz photographer Charles Peterson, with his stamp to the verso. Zutty Singleton (1898-1975), a New Orleans native, was an influential drum pioneer, often considered to be the first to popularize the use of brushes and drum solos in jazz. He began his career after the First World War playing in bands with Papa Celestin, Luis Russell and on the riverboats with Fate Marable. Singleton came to prominence in the 20's playing on some of Louis Armstrong's immortal Hot Five recordings, and later moved to New York where he performed with Fats Waller; during the 30's he worked in the bands of jazz luminaries Roy Eldridge and Sidney Bechet, then moved to Los Angles in 1941 where he led a series of bands, until a stroke ended his career in 1970. The photograph is about near fine, tiny nicks to bottom margins, scattered surface dings, with pencil annotation and small ink spot with a hint of adhesive residue to verso. The autograph is fine in black ink without loss or fading A very uncommon original photograph with the scarce signature of an early jazz great, originally from the collection of long-time jazz autograph collector and seller, Larry Rafferty.
