Duke Ellington Original Vintage Cardinal Cotillion Club, Invitational Booklet /Dance Card, for a “mid-summer dance”, in Mt. Sterling., Kentucky, August 17, 1936, boldly SIGNED in pencil on the first page by the Duke, and SIGNED again by Ellington on a small card, laid in.
This would have a typical night for the band which had seamlessly made the transition into the Swing Era, maintaining a grueling schedule of one-nighters with appearances across the US in theaters, dance halls, and nightclubs, and obviously at the occasional high-society debutante ball.
The dance card, despite featuring popular Ellington like Sophisticated Lady and Mood Indigo, is empty. Perhaps the lucky debutante who’d had a moment with the Maestro found that the rest of the evening paled a little in comparison.
Card stock booklet, 3” by 4”, pictorial wraps, 4pp, staple bound, about fine with just a touch of age toning. This is a little gem, a charming and scarce early piece of Ellingtonia. J1802
