Original Autograph Card, inscribed and SIGNED by Stephane Grappelli (1908-1997). Grappelli has been described as the "grandfather of the jazz violin" and is probably the most celebrated of all European jazz musicians. He first came to fame in 1934 in the Quintette du Hot Club de France with the legendary guitarist Django Reinhart. After the war he began a long and illustrious career in which he performed on hundreds of recordings with many of the great musicians of his era, including Duke Ellington and Oscar Peterson, as well as making notable recordings with classical virtuosos, violinist, Yehudi Menuhin and cellist, Yo Yo Ma. Grappelli played and recorded well into his eighties, was inducted into to the Downbeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1983 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. The 3" by 5", white ruled card is fine, with a fine bold signature in blue ink without loss or fading and a pencil notation of Grappelli's name at the bottom right recto and the top edge verso. He has signed as "Grappelly" which strongly suggests that the signing probably predates 1969, the time at which the vilionist changed the gallacized spelling of his name by which he had been known for the first three decades of his career, to the now generally used "Grappelli". An original signature of a jazz luminary in collector's condition. J1784
