Farrar, Straus & Giroux, New York, 2007, First Edition with complete number line, SIGNED at the title page by the author. This copy was kindly signed by the author for JazzFirst Books at our special request, for a catalogue of significant contemporary jazz publications, and is scarce, thus. Eschewing conventional biography, Ratliff, the respected jazz critic for the New York Times, has written an idiosyncratic, stimulating and deeply considered musical and critical study of the great saxophonist. He approaches Coltrane through the history of his “sound”, in examining the relentless, almost superhuman development of Coltrane’s musical concept; from his unlikely beginnings as a journey-man R&B saxophonist, to his near-mythic status as the era’s most influential jazz musician, at the time of his untimely death. The second part of the book looks at the enduring legacy of Coltrane’s music, in jazz but also in the broader cultural sphere. In quarter blue cloth over black boards, fine, unread, in a like dust jacket, touch of shelf wear, unclipped, now in mylar sleeve. An important contribution to Coltrane studies, the book was a finalist for The National Book Critics Circle Award in 2007. J2038
