Original b&w candid photograph of acclaimed tenor saxophonist Al Cohn, captured in performance in Toronto, Canada. SIGNED and dated 1985 in gold ink, at the bottom right recto by Canadian jazz photographer, Barry Thomson. Addtionally SIGNED and inscribed by the photographer to the verso, reading in part: "To Stan Getz, Here's another pal of yours - Al Cohn, another of the originals!, From Barry Thomson, June 28 1986" . From the estate of the great tenor saxophonist, Stan Getz. The photograph is one of two we have by Thomson from Getz's estate (the other depicts tenorist Zoot Sims), significant because both Cohn and Sims worked early in their careers with Getz in Woody Herman's acclaimed "Second" Herd. Zoot and Stan were part of the original famed Herman "Four Brothers" sax section and Cohn joined them just a little later, in 1948 replacing tenorist Herbie Stewart in the section which also included the great baritone saxophonist, Serge Chaloff. The "Four Brothers" were named for Jimmy Giuffre's arrangement for the Herman band which was written to show-case the gifted young saxophonists. This tightly harmonized arrangement, coupled with the buoyant, airy, Lester Young-inspired sound of the section became a signature sound of the band and anticipated the the West Coast Cool School of the 1950's. The photograph, is near fine+, printed without margins, on glossy paper with very light surface markings. An interesting jazz collectible with a very nice jazz association, from the estate of a jazz great. J1499.
