Original, vintage, glossy, 8" by 10", b&w promotional photo, inscribed and SIGNED in blue ink at the top left corner by acclaimed jazz clarinetist, Buster Bailey. Stamp of the noted jazz photographer Jack Bradley to verso with notation in red ink at top edge, "Buster Bailey - Steel Peir [sic], Atlantic City, N.J.- July, 1965". William C. "Buster" Bailey (1903- 1967) was a major figure in the formative days of jazz, a clarinet virtuoso who began his career at fifteen in W. C. Handy's orchestra and became a part of jazz history as a member of King Oliver's legendary Creole Jazz Band which included his friend, the young Louis Armstrong. Bailey went on to a long and distinguished career, playing with, among many others, the Fletcher Henderson and Noble Sissle Orchestras in the 30's, the John Kirby Sextet in the 40's, with the great New Orleans trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen in the 50's, before coming full circle, ending his career as a member of Louis Armstrong's All-Stars. Slight creasing to top right corner, small spot of soiling to recto at the top edge, else, fine, bright, unmarked. The inscription and signature are fine and clean, without loss or skipping.
A scarce jazz collectible, handsome photo portrait with the uncommon signature of an early jazz pioneer, autographed less than two years before his death in 1967. J1444
