Max Roach 8" by 10", glossy, b & w, original promotional still, an elegant photograph for the Gretsch Drum Company, ; originally SIGNED in blue ink by the great jazz drummer at the bottom left corner, with the Gretsch imprint and printed facsimile signature to bottom right. Our thanks to drum restoration specialist, Jack Lawton, for referring us to Gretsch drum historian, John Sheridan, who helpfully nailed the photo date with this interesting comment: "For Gretsch's Diamond Anniversary (1883-1958), the company did endorser photo shoots…their top endorsers in 1958 were: Art Blakey, Louie Bellson, Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip, Don Lamond, Art Taylor, Chico Hamilton, Sonny Payne, Mel Lewis, and of course, Max Roach. As you can see, the floor tom leg brackets, bass drum t-rods & claws, "stickcopper" rims were typical '50s-style, but would change by late-'58/1959. Max's kit here is Silver Sparkle & he was first to be photographed using an 18" bass drum." Great stuff!
The photograph is near fine, with scattered light surface dings, mild crease to bottom left corner, verso is clean and unmarked; the original inscription in blue ink is about fine with no loss or fading. An uncommon, vintage photograph signed by a jazz great, in collectible condition. J1958
