Quartet Books, London, 1975, UK First Edition. Inscribed and SIGNED by the author at the title page, "To Jean Gleason, with all good wishes, Yours sincerely, John Chilton". Inscribed to the wife of and from the library of Ralph J. Gleason, influential pop and jazz critic and author, producer of the acclaimed Jazz Casual television series and a founding editor of Rolling Stone magazine. The late Ms. Gleason acted as her husband's primary editor and business manager and after Gleason's death fought successfully to regain the rights to all his television programs. Chilton is an esteemed jazz historian and traditional jazz trumpeter, author of a number of acclaimed jazz biographies, including those of Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins and Sidney Bechet as well as the still indispensable reference, Who's Who Of Jazz. Although later biographies, notably Donald Clarke's Wishing On The Moon, would go further in correcting the record, this comprehensive biography of the great jazz singer's career marked the first attempt to dispel the myths and misunderstandings proffered in Billie's own autobiography, Lady Sings The Blues, and in the later very forgettable movie, starring Diana Ross. In purple boards, spine ends are compressed, else about fine, tight, clean, unmarked, in a like dust jacket, unclipped, slight crease to head of spine, in mylar sleeve. Uncommon signed copy with a nice jazz association. J1480
