Stein & Day, New York, 1975, First US Edition, First Printing. Chilton is an esteemed jazz biographer, historian and traditional jazz trumpeter, author of a number of acclaimed jazz biographies, including those of Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins and Sidney Bechet as well as the still indispensable reference, Who's Who Of Jazz. Although later biographies, notably Donald Clarke's Wishing On The Moon, would go further in correcting the record, this comprehensive biography of the great jazz singer's career marked the first attempt to dispel the myths and misunderstandings proffered in Billie's own autobiography, Lady Sings The Blues, and in the later very forgettable movie, starring Diana Ross. Quarter black cloth over grey boards, spine ends are slightly compressed, small previous owner label to ffep, touch of wear to bottom edges, little pieces of cello tape to pastedowns, originally held dust jacket in place, else very good++, tight, clean. In a very good+ dust jacket, unclipped, small cello tape pieces to flaps, light wear to spine ends and extremities. Quite uncommon in this edition. J1467
